"With that sort of ostinato (Theme from Peter Gunn) you can play anything over it. The modal approach saved a lot of people's musical lives - you put a cat on the white keys of the piano and let it run around and play an F and C in the bass it'll sound all right. It's what Stravinsky called pandiatonic.

The trouble is it was dangerous because you got these people who think they were geniuses because they play all these runs. But like I say, the modal thing is to easy. It has it's place, but I miss the other kind of harmony you get with major, minor, tonal ad chromatic harmony. Modal harmony is all too safe."
